Grammar resources are provided for specific sentence and paragraph-level writing skills such as capitalization, punctuation, sentence construction

Students are taught the writing process.

Every Simplify Writing® unit covers the writing process from brainstorming to publishing, with structured mini-lessons that guide students through each step. At the end of each unit, students will have produced a published piece for a specific writing genre.

Students have daily opportunities to write.

Students practice writing on a daily basis, with the opportunity to produce both simple and extended writing pieces. Students will learn to complete the writing process over a period of days or weeks, as well as in a condensed time frame as might be required in a testing environment.

Writing instruction aligns with writing standards and curriculum goals.

Grade-level units align to New York’s Next Generation Standards for Writing, with units that cover the writing process across a range of genres, including narrative, informational, and opinion/argumentative pieces. Students will learn to incorporate research to build background and support their ideas in writing.

Science of Writing
Research-Based Components

Systematic, Explicit Instruction

Every Simplify Writing® unit focuses on one targeted skill, breaking down the writing process into manageable pieces for clarity. Teachers use direct instruction to model each skill and provide opportunities for students to immediately apply it in their own writing.

Graphic Organizers

Consistent graphic organizers are used for each part of the writing process from Kindergarten to 8th grade, providing a framework for students to map ideas and organize their thoughts.

Integration with Reading

Students will interact with high-quality mentor texts and reference texts throughout each unit. Authentic writing tasks also allow students to apply and extend their comprehension skills in writing. Finally, students will use and apply phonics skills for encoding, connecting the tasks of reading and writing.

Modeling & Exemplar Usages

Teacher models are the cornerstone of every Simplify Writing® unit, with guidance that shows teachers exactly how to use the mentor texts provided to model skills for students. Student exemplars are also provided for every genre to show authentic writing at a range of levels.

Consistent & Timely Feedback

The Simplify Writing® curriculum uses quick check-ins, peer feedback, small groups, and 1-on-1 conferring to ensure all students have the support they need to grow as writers.

THE NEW YORK TEACHER EXPERIENCE

"20 point gain on state assessments!"

"I first discovered Simplify Writing® through the free course and began testing the sample resources in my classroom. I was so impressed with the results that I sought funding to adopt it at our school. Simplify Writing® has been especially effective for my ELL and migrant students, providing content that meets their needs while supporting sentence fluency and paragraph writing. The access to multiple grade levels has made it easy to scaffold instruction and meet students where they are. All of my students have shown growth in writing, with 85% making at least a 20-point gain on the state assessment."
